Habitat and distribution[ edit ]
It is sometimes an understory tree in pine stands on sandy knolls in the southeastern USA. Along the coastal plain of New Jersey the probability of finding this species is increased in relatively sunny, open areas such as those near coastal salt marshes. It often occurs near scarlet and post oaks as well as pitch pine ; understory companions include winged sumac , bracken , sweetfern , and bayberry , and can be found as far north as parts of Ohio [12] and New York.
The Blackjack Oak sometimes hybridizes with the Bear Oak ( Quercus ilicifolia ), forming a hybrid known as Q. X brittonii . [17]

Very tolerant of drought. Not grown by many landscape nurseries but common in dry deciduous forests in the eastern US. Due to the coarse root system, the tree is often raised in fabric containers in field soil, is regularly root pruned in the field, or is grown in air root-pruning or copper root-pruning containers. The container systems allow for less circling roots along the edge of the root ball; the field systems may result in a greater portion of the root system harvested. Plants have been rooted from cuttings.
Trees occur in the panhandle of Florida east to Madison County.
Existing trees are often left near new homes and other buildings in new developments. Roots damaged by construction equipment decay quickly. This can leave the plant with few supporting roots in the years following construction despite a green canopy. The tree could fall over as a result. In addition, branches that are suddenly exposed to unlimited light when nearby trees are removed begin to grow rapidly. As a result, they could become too long and break. Keep them shortened with reduction cuts to help prevent breakage.
Oak wood is considered ring porous to semi-ring porous. Oaks serve as larvae host plants for the brown duskywing butterfly ( Erynnis horatius ) and the gray hairstreak ( Strymon melinus ).

Does Blackjack taste similar to other Oaks?

N Texas I've done a lot of cooking mainly using either hickory or post oak and some pecan. I have a tree of blackjack cut and split ready to cook with offered to me. Just wondering if its simulare to post oak or white oak. Thanks! - Apr 21, 2013 #2

Largo, FL You should check out this link to wikipedia for blackjack oak. It's very dense. That means it will actually burn 'ashless' in the right conditions. You'll have a very good piece of wood that will burn very low and slow. It is very similar to post oak. The density of the wood make it burn that way. Here's a wiki quote: The wood is very dense and produces a hot flame when burned, which functions as an excellent source of heat for barbecues and wood-burning stoves. However, the wood is not desirable for wood fireplaces because the heat causes popping, thereby increasing the risk of house fires. I use several oaks as a base wood and really like it. Since I always mix it with fruit wood, I can't tell the difference between the oaks that I have used. Rarely use hickory anymore, like a lighter, sweeter smoke flavor as I get older. As usual, just make sure it is dried and aged well before use. - Apr 22, 2013 #4

N Texas This weekend I smoked a brisket and spare ribs with blackjack wood. The first part I cooked at low temp then kicked the temp up the last 7hrs. Total Cook time was about 10hrs. The smoke was a medium smoke flavor. I thought it was something between an oak and hickory flavor, not sure but it was darn good!!! The neighbors loved it! - Apr 28, 2013 #7
